The Northwest College forensics team placed third in the Laramie County Community College tournament Friday, Feb. 2, and second place in the Hastings College tournament Saturday, Feb. 3.
In the novice division of debate at the LCCC tournament, Caiti Barski and Sara Holwenger placed second. Holwenger was also awarded fifth place in speaker awards. Karl Borneman received seventh place and Barski received first place.
In the open division of debate, Pat Anderson and Cecil Moon placed third while Megan Reed and Brett Delaney placed fifth. Moon received a sixth-place speaker award, and Delaney a fifth.
In individual events, NWC brought home six awards. Delaney took fourth in prose and second place in after-dinner speaking. Jared Bressler placed fourth in communication analysis while Grant Langdon placed fourth in poetry interpretation. Anderson was awarded sixth place in impromptu speaking and Christian Satterlee won fourth in informative speaking.
Bressler commented, “I’ve learned from this tournament how much Duane (Fish) needs to be running it.”
The team competed in individual events on Saturday at the Hastings College tournament. Delaney and Langdon paced second and Coach Duane Fish said, “These two gentlemen are each one man wrecking crews.”
Landgon went on to receive first place in dramatic interpretation and fourth in poetry interpretation.
“His performance was so moving that people got up and left the room. One of the judges in the final round even got up to leave. He received straight ones in every round from every judge,” said Fish.
Langdon commented, “If I wouldn’t have worked as hard as I did with Jeannie (Hunt) and Duane, I wouldn’t have broke.”
Delaney then placed third in after-dinner speaking and fourth in dramatic interpretation. NWC received five of the top eight places in the dramatic interpretation when Bryce Cornetzer placed second in the event, Chelsea Hampton placed seventh and Matt Sharp placed eighth. Bressler placed third in communication analysis, fourth in impromptu speaking and seventh in extemporaneous speaking. He commented, “Had the judges been more astute, I might have done better.”
Michalea Coats brought home a sixth-place award in informative speaking and commented, “Bob (Becker) helped me with my informative piece and I did much better.” Moon also received a fifth-place award in extemporaneous speaking.
In the two tournaments combined, Fish said the forensics team placed second overall.
