Student senate assists with club funding

Clubs members still interested in applying for funding still have plenty of time during the fall and spring semester. The way that the Student Senate is doing the funding this year is a little different than previous years. At the initial asking for money the club has to fill out the application and return it one week prior to the Student Senate meeting. After the initial application, the clubs may request money without having to fill out another application. Clubs are allowed to ask for $400 per semester. The number of times a club goes to the Senate is not limited just as long as it does not exceed the $400.

“Very seldom does the Senate turn down a club requesting money,” said Dee Havig, director of Student Life.

The application consists of an information page, a list of members, a description of the activity in which the club is asking the Senate for the money and the final page is a summary at the end of the semester of how the club used the money and also a description of a community service the club did. Doing a community service event is one of the requirements for receiving money. Of the total amount of money that the senate has in their account 16.82% comes from the student fixed fees and goes towards the funding, student health and various other senate funded projects.

Havig also said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if more clubs come to the Senate for money this semester. The late date of the application really caused an impact. I still hope clubs will come in this semester and still ask for the money even if they already did the project.”

Each of the clubs should have received an application in the mail, but if not more applications can be picked up at the housing office in the DeWitt Student Center.
