Last Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the Northwest College DeWitt Student Center, Phi Theta Kappa kicked off its first meeting for 2005-06.
Freshman Jacey Lucus led the meeting with an introduction to clogging.
The national level of Phi Theta Kappa chooses an honors study topic every year by the Honors Committee. This year, members chose pop culture as their topic.
With that, NWC’s Phi Theta Kappa selected clogging as its pop culture topic and opened the meeting to any interested students.
At noon an enthusiastic group of 11 students participated in the workshop. Lucus led the group with baby steps at first.
Once confident of their progress, Lucus stepped it up a bit with a blaring boom box of U2’s Vertigo.
Frantically keeping in time with the chimes and clicks from Lucus’s clogging shoes, the group raced along to the tune. Sliding between the pause button and her pupils, Lucus went over the choreography several times to reassure them.
Pushing their thrill, Lucas upgraded their steps to hops and then to a hands-on hips finale.
“The clogging event was Jacey’s idea. I’m very happy she put this up for us. It was a blast,” said President Milli Stamness.
The group is planning a Sock Day today (Oct. 13). Members are encouraging every student to bring a pair of socks, which will be sent as relief items to hurricane victims.
Phi Theta Kappa holds a meeting every Wednesday from noon to 1p.m. Member Renee Humphries can answer any questions or comments at renee.humphries@northwestcollege.net
