Northwest College student Ashton Schlenker, 21, of Meeteetse died in an automobile accident during a snowstorm last Friday. Schlenker was studying to become a teacher.
The wreck occurred nine miles outside of Meeteetse on Highway 120 around 6:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Steve Townsend of the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Traveling south, Schlenker lost control of her vehicle on the icy, snowy road. Her 2002 Pontiac crossed into the northbound lane.
A northbound car struck the right rear of Schlenker’s vehicle, causing it to hit the guardrail on the east side of the road, said Townsend.
Schlenker was transported by ambulance to West Park Hospital in Cody. She died later Friday evening.
The other car, driven by Danny Gotcher, came to a rest in the middle of the road. Gotcher was traveling with a passenger. Schlenker was alone in her car. All passengers in the vehicles were wearing their seatbelts, Townsend said.
Schlenker is survived by her husband David Schlenker, her parents, Robert and Debra Lewandowski, and two younger sisters, Trinity and Stephanie.
Schlenker married her husband on July 1, 2006. They met in their senior year of high school and have known each other for about four years.
“She was one of the most beautiful persons I have ever met,” said Schlenker’s friend, Caitlin Blackburn, of Laramie. “She was never afraid to have fun with her friends. She wasn’t afraid to be goofy.”
