The bond between a father and his daughter is undeniable and unbreakable. It is one of the most special relationships a person could have. I know this first hand because I am a daddy’s girl, and always have been. Some of the most popular country songs on the radio today are about this bond.
My favorite by far is Tim McGraw’s “My Little Girl.” It is the sweetest, most heartfelt song that I have heard in a long time. With every word he sings, it sounds like he could laugh and cry at the same time. He sings every word with every inch of his being, and in turn the song is very emotional. The most touching lyric is when it says “When you were in trouble that crooked little smile could melt my heart of stone. And I look at you I’ve turned around and you’re almost grown. Sometimes you’re asleep I whisper ‘I love you’ in the moonlight at your door. As I walk away I hear you say ‘Daddy love you more.’ ” “My Little Girl” is a touching song because it is saying that no matter what the daughter does, her dad will always be there for her. I love this song because it reminds me of the relationship that I have with my dad.
Another popular country song that takes on this topic is “I Loved Her First” by Heartland. This song, unlike “My Little Girl,” is about a dad’s feeling and thoughts as his daughter gets married. This song is also very heartfelt, but it is more reminiscent of their memories and trying to protect his daughter from getting her heart broken. It says, “I loved her first. I held her first. And a place in my heart will always be hers. From the first breath she breathed, when she first smiled at me I knew the love of a father ran deep.” That part reminds me of my dad, who is very protective of me and always wants what is best for me. And I love him for it.
A song that isn’t necessarily a father-daughter song, but is still very special to my dad and me is Conway Twitty’s “That’s My Job.” It’s about the phases of life, realizing that through everything, your dad is still there for you whenever you need him. This song will always hold a special place in my heart because my dad and I used to dedicate it to each other when he worked afternoons at the refinery. For me it was the worst of all of his shifts, especially during the school year, because he worked 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. for seven days straight. I didn’t get home from school until 4 p.m. and he wasn’t awake usually when I left for school, as a result I didn’t see him very often. So this song became our way to say good night to each other in a way.
I love being a daddy’s girl. None of the songs are lying or adding to the glory of this bond. It is really that strong. The best part of it is knowing that my dad will always be there for me no matter what happens. Plus, it’s nice to know that if any boy breaks my heart my dad will break his bones, or at least he’ll want to.
