Calling at the right time still important when getting a date

Dear Kimball,
I got a girl’s phone number. What do I say when I call her?
Loveless in L&C
Dear Loveless,
Generally, if you’ve already gotten the girl’s number, the hardest part is over. She is obviously telling you that she is willing to get to know you better, and she is justified in expecting you to call soon. But what you actually say when you do can be an important factor depending on what kind of relationship you have with her right now.
If this girl is someone you know pretty well, you might get away with a “just ‘cuz” type of call. “Just ‘cuz” means if you have already had a few good conversations with her, you could call her just to talk. If you barely know her, a “just ‘cuz” call can come off as a little needy.
If you just met the girl and managed to get her number, you should have a purpose in mind when you call. That purpose is usually to set up a date or some kind of activity in which you can get to know her better. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, lunch works pretty well. Be sure that some type of conversation will be taking place, though.
Make the call short and sweet. Save your questions and cheesy jokes for when you’re face to face with her again.
As a side note, might I add that calling a girl when she hasn’t officially given you her number is a huge no-no. It can be tempting when you somehow get it from another source, but calling unexpectedly and making her say, either in her mind or out loud, “How did you get this number?” is a wee bit stalker-ish.
