On Thursday Sept. 21 the third season of Grey’s Anatomy took off with a premiere that makes people look at their lives and think, “And I have it hard?”
Last season ended with dinner, dancing, and a gut-wrenching tragedy. A prom was thrown by the hospital in honor of a very sick patient and every employee is required to attend.
Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), whom the show’s name stems from, comes with Finn Dandridge (Chris O’Donnell) or “McVet” as the women in the hospital have nicknamed him but ends up with Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), or “Dr. McDreamy” in an exam room where they both conveniently lose their clothes.
The ever beautiful Isobel “Izzie” Stevens (Katherine Heigl) was on her way to visit Denny Duqette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a patient and the man she loves and to accept his proposal of marriage.
However while in the elevator, Denny dies of a stroke which leaves her broken and causes her to quit. Meredith is left standing between Finn and Derek at the end of the night. This is where the episode ends and left hundreds of fans waiting on edge for the beginning of a new season.
The third season began with hope but also with a bit of sadness. The plague is found in several patients in the hospital, sending Derek and George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) into quarantine.
Everyone else has gathered at George’s house, where Izzie lies, numb, on the bathroom floor, still in the dress she wore the night before. No one knows how to comfort her but each takes a turn lying beside her, trying to speak some words of comfort.
Derek and George have a conversation about love which moves Derek to confess his love for Meredith. She is then caught between him and Finn once again as Finn does the same not a moment later.
But in the final moments of this defining episode, Meredith goes to Izzie, pulls up a spot on the tile, and holds her hand, letting Izzie know that it will be all right.
Izzie then lets Meredith help her out of her pink prom dress, leaving the audience feeling rather better about their situations and anxiously anticipating next week’s episode.
