- Sunday night was an evening of ‘favorites and farewells’ as one of America’s favorite TV channels said goodbye. After 10 years, the WB, a network that defined a generation, completed its final broadcast yesterday to make way for the new CW. The CW is a new cable channel that will feature many programs native to the WB but is also adopting several from the now-deceased UPN.
The farewells began at in the late afternoon with the premiere episodes of four dearly- loved shows. Felicity started the lineup at 4 p.m., followed by Angel at 5, Buffy the Vampire Slayer at 6 ending with Dawson’s Creek at 8. Directly after Dawson’s Creek they began Get Ready for the CW, a preview of the upcoming network, hosted by Jared Padalecki (Supernatural, Gilmore Girls) and Tracie Ellis Ross (Girlfriends).
The new lineup includes Seventh Heaven and Runaway on Mondays, Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars on Tuesdays, America’s Next Top Model and One Tree Hill on Wednesdays, Smallville and Supernatural on Thursdays, and Friday Night Smackdown! on Fridays.
While the CW is keeping many shows, it has picked up some new ones and dropped several fan favorites. Everwood was kicked off while Runaway and The Game were brought in. The CW is hoping for better ratings now that it has a larger target audience, composed mainly of females 12-30.
This change has generated many positive and negative opinions. Kaytlin Harris, a junior at Billings West High School in Billings, Mont., states, “It’s sad. I always remember watching the WB growing up. But it’s good to know that they’re keeping shows like Seventh Heaven and not losing the complete flavor, so to speak, of the original channel.” So as we say goodbye to one of our favorite channels we also welcome a new, and potentially fantastic, network full of laughter and family entertainment.
Tune to channel 6 in Powell and Cody to see the new network.
