Underwood Takes the Wheel
Music review by Carrie Sanderson

Carrie Underwood has proved she is not a one-hit wonder.
As the 2005 American Idol winner some success was almost guaranteed, but the Oklahoma native moved past the huge success of “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and did close to the same thing with her second single of her debut album entitled Some Hearts with “Don’t Forget to Remember Me.” Plus, her most recent single “Before He Cheats” is climbing the Billboard charts rapidly and is currently ranked 15.
Underwood’s success as a former American Idol is second only to first-season champion Kelly Clarkson, and that is subject to change. Clarkson’s first album, Thankful, was semi-successful, mostly due to her singles “A Moment Like This” and “Low,” which were her only real successes off of her debut album. Clarkson’s success came with her second album Breakaway, which received two Grammies and produced numerous number one songs such as “Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” “Because of You” and her most recent success, “Walk Away.”
Underwood began her career with a number one hit, “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” which held the spot for a total of six weeks. She followed that success with a second number one entitled “Don’t Forget to Remember Me.“ Most recently she released a definite contender for the number one position with an anthem for all women who have ever been done wrong, “Before He Cheats.”
Underwood has also been recognized for her achievements. At the Academy of Country Music Awards this year, she received two awards one for Top Female Vocalist and the other for Single Record of the Year for “Jesus Take the Wheel.” She has multiple nominations as well for the Country Music Award, to be held in November, including Female Vocalist, Single of the Year for “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and the Horizon Award.
My favorite song on the album would have to be “The Night Before (Life Goes On),” which is about a couple who is spending their last few hours together before they are separated because of different dreams for themselves. She is going to college and he is staying behind with a full time job. It is a sad and bittersweet song, and is definitely a tear-jerker for anyone who has been through something like that.
Coming in a close second would be “Before He Cheats.” I have never been cheated on, but I still think it is awesome when the girl gets revenge on her cheating boyfriend.
Judging by Some Hearts, Underwood is likely to have countless successes in the future.
